Falcons Hold Off Alliance for 2-1 Victory
Secure 2nd place with win
The Flying Falcons are definitely on a roll. After two years of improving and learning, the Falcons came alive last fall, rising up to National three for this Spring. Now after just one season at National 3, the Falcons have secured second place, and are poised to move up to National 2 in the Fall!
The Falcons were great on Sunday in their win over Alliance. On a beautiful June afternoon, the Flying Falcons took their home field against the Alliance. The Alliance was looking for revenge after their last meeting when the Falcons came from 2-0 down to end the game with a 2-2 tie.
The Falcons were pumped and started the game pounding the Alliance. With the ball back and forth several times, Maggie was the one to get things going with a towering left footed goal, that crossed the front of the Alliance’s goal and sailed over their goalie’s head, for the 1-0 lead. Jenny was simply spectacular in goal, turning in her best performance of the year, stopping ball after ball with amazingly fast hands. Michele and Marissa had strong games, repeatedly kicking the ball into Alliance territory. Julia played hard all game. Twenty three minutes in, Julia hit a line drive from 30 yards out, that went in the Alliance goal, for the 2-0 lead. The half ended with both sides tired and the score 2-0. Ani had a great game, displaying great foot work to get around Alliance players.
In the second half, things got tense.
The Falcons seemed to lose a little focus.
Coaches were getting tense.
The Alliance scored.
Soon it was 2-1, with 20 minutes left to go.
Coach Tom started rotating players quickly, talking with them on the sidelines and sending them back out. The Falcons played hard, got a second wind and controlled the last 10 minutes of the game. Sophie and Rebecca were everywhere, playing both offense and defense. Ava kept punching and kicking great balls into play. Coach Vince’s conditioning paid off as the Falcons had enough in the tank to dominate and hold off several Alliance advances. Jenny played just as well the second half, as she did the first, knocking down multiple potential goals.
With three paramedics on standby for the Falcon coaches, the ref blew the whistle for the end of the game, and the Falcons 2-1 victory. Blood pressures immediately dropped, red faces paled and breathing returned for the Falcon coaches.
